There’s been a lot of excitement around here at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa this week! We were not only able to add a very special celebrity client to our roster (which thrilled Vera by the way) but our very own shampoo girl Daffy got to meet and spend some time with one of her favorite T.V. personalities to boot!

Daffy’s been a long-time fan of this lovely lady for years and religiously starts her day exercising with Debbie in front of her television set every morning at precisely 9:15 a.m. come rain or shine!

So that’s how Daffy keeps her figure…well, that and her jog here to the spa to clock in by 10:00!

One of Daffy’s beauty secrets revealed!

Now our newest guest is not only hostess of her very own television exercise program, but she’s also the authoress of the best-selling book “Debbie Drake’s Easy Way to a Perfect Figure and Glowing Health” and has two High-fidelity record albums to her credit; “Feel Good, Look Great! Exercise Along With Debbie Drake!” and “How To Keep Your Husband Happy: Look Slim! Keep Trim!”

As a matter-of-fact, here’s a shot of Daffy’s well-worn copy of Debbie’s book:

And if that isn’t enough, Miss Drake has had the honor of having an actual doll made in her celebrity likeness…the Debbie Drake doll!

The resemblance is uncanny!

Now you may be wondering how Debbie came to make an appointment with us here at the spa. Well, it all began with a phone call from Ms. Drake herself! She happened to be coming to town to make a personal appearance at our local Woolworth’s to promote her latest album:

Take a note ladies!

According to Vera, Ms. Drake would be coming directly from the airport as her tight schedule allowed no extra time to check in at the hotel to prepare herself for her in-store appearance. It also helped that we happened to be located on the same street as Woolworth’s! In just a few short steps, she would be able to greet her fans fresh and beautiful as a daisy! Needless to say, upon hearing the news that morning, Daffy was beside herself with excitement!

Must have been a rough trip!

Debbie began her visit with a star-struck Daffy who assisted her with our Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body. Daffy then washed and conditioned her idols hair and after wrapping her platinum locks in one of our pink spa towels, led her to my chair. After her comb-out, set and style, we discussed her make-up options and she decided she really wanted to emphasize her brown eyes and add some color and definition, a look she doesn’t usually wear. I think it really suits her and she loved it! A bit of blush to the cheeks and a quick stop at Madge’s nail station was all that was left to prepare her for the “In-Person” visit that was quickly approaching. As a finishing touch, Daffy presented Debbie with a pair of Beatrice’s pearl earrings. A gift from a fan!

With a bit of time to spare and as a very special surprise to Daffy, we pushed the furnishings aside in our customer lounge and Debbie led us all through a quick exercise routine. Of course she just instructed us as she had just been made-up and was now wearing a lovely dress and high heels. Daffy just couldn’t believe it, a dream come true! Poor Vera only made it six minutes through…I guess the deep squats did her in. Of course she was wearing a girdle!

Daffy, an aspiring actress herself, was able to spend the last few minutes alone with her idol Debbie Drake who was gracious enough to give her some advice on making it in show business. Debbie told her if she applied herself, books, records and even her own T.V. show were all in reach for her too. And by the way, keeping a great figure wasn’t a bad idea either! Advice Daffy was sure to take to heart and practice…beginning tomorrow morning at 9:15 a.m. sharp!

Tomato, Tamato!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them…

The busy week began when our receptionist Vera received an urgent telephone call from Ernesto, a dear friend of the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa.

Ernesto is not only a brilliant photographer, he’s also a wonderful writer and the creator of DOLLDOM one of my very favorite fashion doll sites! If you haven’t already, you must drop in…I’m sure you’ll all love it! In fact, the spa clients in today’s post are all in- house fashion models who work exclusively in his studio…and this is their story!

Vera informed me that Ernesto’s Silkstone models needed appropriate hairstyles for the elegant couture wardrobe that was to be featured in an up-coming DOLLDOM pictorial. He had scheduled hair appointments for his selected models with her…and she was very excited to have this elite group of supermodels visit us here at the spa. As some of you may know, Vera’s a bit high-toned and is always looking to add another fabulous feather to the Pink Bubble’s Doll Spa cap and informed us all that the models visit would “bring up the tone of the place!”

Now according to the plan, the seven girls were going to be driving down the coast very early the next morning for their hair appointments, giving them plenty of time to return that evening for the scheduled fashion shoot. Well, in a perfect world plans go…well basically as planned! Unfortunately, this was not the case in this instance and I’m afraid our dear Vera got caught up in the cross-hairs!

It all started when the models car broke down about half way down the coast. Fortunately they were able to call us from a garage to let us know of the delay. Now Vera, already knowing of Ernesto’s shooting schedule, wanted to make sure their visit went off without a hitch, so she decided to drive up and give the girls a lift the rest of the way in her Chevy convertible. You may have seen it about town. It’s hard to miss…baby pink with “Pink Bubbles Doll Spa” logos painted on both the doors!

Now that would have been a happy ending to a slight bump in the road…except Vera’s usually dependable Chevy overheated as well on the way back! Well, as you can imagine with a group as large as that; seven lovely young girls…as well as we’ll say, a very well-preserved Vera…rides to accommodate them all were hard to come by! The best the stranded group could do in this pinch was…are you ready…a lift in the back of an open-bed tomato truck inward bound to L.A.! Well, a rides a ride and the girls convinced a very skeptical Vera that they should take it.

So, with the Chevy hitched securely to the back bumper, off they went!

Back at the salon Daffy and I were beginning to worry about our clients whereabouts when suddenly, a big red truck full of tomatoes pulled up in front of the spa! Surprised, we both watched as the girls jumped out of the back, laughing as they headed towards the doors of the spa. Last to emerge was our very own Vera…hair askew looking a little windblown after the trip down the scenic coast of the 101 Freeway! And you should have seen the expression on her face as she hopped down out of the back of that truck and removed a very ripe tomato from the back heel of her shoe!

Well, with their road trip adventure behind them, each girl took their turn in my chair. They each received an elegant new hairstyle more suited to the classic couture they were soon to wear. A happy ending after all as the girls indeed made it back in time for the shoot!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them…

This is lovely Mia, a recent client who came in for an afternoon of pampering and relaxation…Pink Bubbles style! She cashed in one of our holiday spa gift certificates given to her by her boss. She’s really earned it too as she holds down a very high-stress job as a secretary down at “Bickers & Bickers” law firm. You see, Mr. and Mrs. Bickers are the top divorce lawyers here in our town…in fact our receptionist Vera’s hired them to represent her in all three of her’s!

Now Mrs. Bickers is also a very loyal client of mine and visits me here twice a month for her lavender tint touch-ups. She really depends on me to keep her looking good in front of the judge! She’s such a doll…why just last week she told me that she and Mr. Bickers just celebrated their 38th anniversary…of the law firm that is! Yes, they’re divorced 31 years, but the firm continues to thrive so they’re still together every single day. You know, sometimes you just can’t get rid of man…no matter how hard you try!

According to Mrs. Bickers, Mia, her personal secretary, gets a bit frazzled at times handling all those squabbling couples every day out there in the front office. That’s why she’s treating her to this day of beauty. She’s heard Mia say more than once that she feels like “tearing her own hair out” sometimes. And that would be a real shame too as she’s got the most delicious brunette side-part bubble…a really rare hairstyle for sure.

Now I’ve had many gals come through my station sporting bubble-cuts of every color and shape (not to mention condition!) but Mia’s rare style is among the very few I’ve had visit me here to date.

Here’s a quick snap of a true “side-part” bubble-cut hair-do:

Mia requested a fresh wash and set of her hair and wanted to refresh her make-up a bit as well.

To soothe her frayed nerves, Daffy put on some soft music and assisted Mia with her Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body. Then on to the shampoo bowl where a scalp massage was part of the deep cleansing treatment, followed by a conditioner. Once seated in my chair, a comb-out, reset and style were all on the docket!

With her hair set to perfection, I tidied up her shadow and added a bit of blush. Her lips were also returned to their original coral pink color, that is after I removed some pink waxy lipstick that didn’t suit her at all.

In the court of public opinion, and I’m sure Mrs. Bicker would concur, the case is now closed.

She Bangs!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them…

This pretty gal came in this week for one of our complimentary Pink Bubbles Doll Spa consultations. She introduced herself as Elaine but asked me to call her Lannie, as all her friends do. Now when Lannie first took a seat in my chair I just assumed that it must have been very windy outside that morning as her hair, especially her bangs, looked a fright. But alas, it wasn’t the whipping wind that had done a number on her “do”, it was just Father Time’s way of saying “Girlfriend, your working a forty-nine year old hair set…make a hair appointment already!”

Obviously her main beauty concern was that her once sleek bob had become quite unruly, poofing out at the sides and that her bangs for some reason kept getting shorter instead of longer as the years went by. Odd, but true! She swore she never trimmed them, but they still kept creeping ever-upwards.

Now bangs aren’t for everybody, they do take a bit of maintenance. If you choose to wear them, they must be kept at the right length. Left too long, they look untidy and hang in your field of vision like a sheep dog, so you end up spending a good part of your day pushing them out of your eyes. Frustrated, some gals resort to hair barrette’s, clipping them up away, which is a cute look…if your name happens to be Skooter! On the other hand, cut too short, they look like someone (probably you) made a tragic hair trimming mistake “evening them out” and you’re now having to pay the price till they grow back.

Now Lannie still had all the basics for a great looking hairstyle. A classic American-Girl cut in a gorgeous shade of strawberry blonde. Though it did look a bit uneven to the untrained eye, it hadn’t in fact ever been cut…just needed a little Pink Bubble’s T.L.C. by yours truly!

The trick to a great American Girl hairstyle is all in the set. After a bit of time in the hands of my wonderful assistant Daffy, who made sure Lannie’s hair was washed, conditioned and tangle-free before returning her to me, I began the task of re-setting her hair close to the head. After that her hair looked quite a bit longer, including her bangs. A very light trim, just to even things out a bit was all that was left to return her classic hairdo to factory original standards!

The only thing left to do was add a touch of color repair to her shadow and lids and mix a special lip color of the palest of pinks for a light color-wash to match her wonderfully faded lips. A lip color like Lannie’s is like a fine wine in the fashion doll world…aged to perfection!

Polished to perfection, Lannie’s hair never looked so good…well maybe it did in 1965!

So if you want to “go out with a bang!” ladies, this is the proper way to do it!
