All dolls have secret lives as we all know. Here’s a peek into four of them…

Beth, Ginger, Susie and Jo-Ann have been best friends since they were all kids. They did everything together growing up and shared a common passion for singing and making music. You could always find the four girls in the isles of our towns record shop on Saturday afternoons picking up the latest hits from girl groups like “Martha and the Vandellas,” “The Shangri-Las” and of course their absolute all-time favorite…”The Ronettes!”

RonettesColor

“The Ronette’s”…60’s Hair Heaven!

Well I guess it was just inevitable that the girls would form their own all-girl band in high school. Often dressing alike and wearing their hair in the same high elaborate styles just like their idols…much to the dismay of their Mother’s on some occasions!

Calling themselves “The Baby Dolls” they made the rounds of school dances, talent shows and of course our own county fair. Gifted with beautiful singing voices and with the unique addition of playing their own instruments, they soon gained their own following among our local teen set.

With jobs after school they saved up all they could and with a little help from their parents, were eventually able to cut a few singles. “What’s So Sweet About Sweet Sixteen?” and  “You bet I Would!” were even played here on the local radio station for a few weeks! Now I’m not really one for all that loud music as you all know, but Daffy would always run and turn up the radio here in the spa whenever their songs were played. I have to admit it…they were good! I even spied Vera, who claims she only cares for classical music, tapping her foot to the beat under her desk!

After graduation, the four girls escorted by some of their parents of course, took a trip to New York to try their luck and soon found an agent eager to promote their unique sound. With Beth, Susie and Jo-Ann on their electric guitars and Ginger’s deft handling of the drumsticks, it wasn’t long before they were booked on popular T.V. dance shows like “Shindig” and “Hullabaloo!” The rest I guess you can say is history. Local girls make good!

Now I don’t care where your going or where you’ve been, if you’re a home-town girl, all roads eventually lead back to The Pink Bubbles Doll Spa…it’s just tradition! The girls Mother’s have been clients of ours for as long as I can remember and of course their daughters always accompany them for a day of spa pampering whenever they’re back home for a visit. You can count on Daffy not wanting that particular day off if she spies their names in Vera’s book of appointments! In fact, we suddenly become the “hip” place to be with the younger set like Francie, Becky, Gidget and her best gal pal La-Rue on days like these!

Every girl, famous or not always leaves Pink Bubbles looking their absolute best. They may not arrive that way but they sure leave us refreshed and glowing! Here are some quick shots of how the “Dolls” looked when they showed up for their appointments:

Here’s Beth:

As you can see, being in “showbiz” is hard on a girl’s hair! Hot lights, teasing, hair pieces and tons of hairspray can take their toll on your crowning glory. In the capable hands of Daffy they each enjoyed a good wash and deep conditioning of their locks, prepping them for their time in my styling chair. Needless to say, they wanted their hairdo’s to all be the same! The ponytail hairstyle was a perfect choice and is also a very popular and much requested look here at Pink Bubbles. Each girl wears it in her own unique way!

Next it was time for some fresh make-up. Each gal had her own beauty needs and the color palate was different for all four. Of course what’s a new look without a stop at Madge’s manicurist table! There, each girl was giving a nail polish specially matched to her lip color.

Check out their “before & after” pics below:

Far from the stage lights and cameras, their wholesome “girl next door” looks are once again restored much to the delight and appreciation of their grateful Mother’s! Enjoy it Mom’s…well, for the moment anyway!

The girls and their Mother’s all with fresh make-overs informed us they were heading out to lunch next. I hope they don’t mind being followed by their “groupies” who had been hanging out in our reception area all that time, driving poor Vera nuts!

Of course we couldn’t let them leave without a request for an autographed photo for our “Wall of Fame.” They promised to send one soon. In fact, here’s a surprise we received in the mail just a few days later:

hair-babydolls

Oh my, I hardly recognized them! Not typical “Pink Bubbles” make-overs at all if you ask me. Cute outfits though…you can never go wrong with gold lame in my opinion! Oh well, I guess I had better “get with it!” as Daffy is always telling me. Music, fashion and yes hairdo’s are always changing with the times. Well maybe so, but I must admit it…I just love my own little time capsule here within the walls of The Pink Bubbles Doll Spa and I hope all my clients and readers do too! Come by and visit us anytime, you know you’re always welcome…but please do remember to book any of your gals beauty needs directly through our receptionist Vera, because as you know, she’s a real stickler about her darn appointment book!

Thanks Lavina for sending the “Dolls” to The Pink Bubbles Doll Spa! Our staff wishes them all much continued success and hope they’ll always follow their musical dreams!

Automat Annie!

P.B.D.S. Client – #0037

From the collection of Victoria!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them…

Annie’s a new client here at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa and we have Madge, our world-renowned manicurist to thank for introducing all of us to her. Now being in the nail business all these years, the absolute first thing Madge notices about anyone is the state of their manicure. She just can’t help it. I tell you your hair could be on fire and she’d be checking your fingers for chipped polish!

miner

Now Madge always visits the Automat in the morning for a quick cup of coffee and a danish before she clocks in. According to her, she had just dropped a quarter into the slot for her pastry and was opening the little glass door to take it when the plate holding her breakfast suddenly began to slide inwards away from her! Now no one keeps Madge from her morning Bear Claw, so she gave the plate a rather firm tug back and out it came…with the server’s hand still holding onto the other side of the pretty jadeite green dish! Quickly letting go, it disappeared back into the compartment and out of sight.

automat_1902

Peering into the little opening, Madge shouted “You there! What’s the big idea…and what’s going on with those nails!” Reaching into her handbag, she took out one of her cards and placed it inside the compartment. Leaning in, she shouted “Come see me!” before closing the tiny door. Well according to Madge, not more than ten minutes later, a young girl clutching her business card appeared at her table where she sat finishing up her breakfast.

DSC08091

“Hi, I’m Annie.” the girl said. “I want to apologize about the danish…I was just trying to swap it out for a tuna on rye for the lunch crowd.” “Don’t worry about it Honey, frankly I’m more concerned with the state of your nails. I’m down the street at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa…you should come in. In fact, we have a special spa package deal going on right now that not only includes my services, but the works… skin, hair, make-up…anything you need. Come on by. Ask for Madge!”

And guess what? She did!

As you can all see, Annie’s nails were the least of her beauty problems! She did end up taking advantage of our special spa package which included everything she needed for her day of pampering. After her relaxing Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body, Daffy noticed and removed a broken earring post in Annie’s ear that had begun to corrode. Thankfully, the dreaded “green ear” had only just begun to form and she was saved from that fate in the nick of time! She then had her hair washed and deep conditioned, which was a good thing as it took quite a while to untangle.

DSC08084

I’m always amazed at how lovely a girl’s hair can actually become with a little effort! (Well, maybe more than just a little!)

Picture3cWith her pretty red hair returned to its former glory, I then addressed her make-up needs. For starters, she had no trace of eyebrows left at all, so I had to start from scratch, which is always a challenge. Shade and placement being key, I think hers turned out quite lovely. Next, I repaired her shadow and lids. Satisfied with these results, I moved on to her lips. A new application of red, mixed to match the remnants of her original shade, did the trick. And for a finishing touch, as always, a light application of blush. She then left my station and reunited with her new best friend Madge, where she spent the remainder of her visit just “soaking in it!”

Below are Annie’s amazing results!

Annie was so pleased with her new look that she promised to tell all her girlfriends about our spa. And as a very special thank you, she gave each of our staff five shiny new tokens each, good for anything our hearts desired that may lay behind the shiny glass compartments of Madge’s favorite morning stop, the Automat!

Thanks Annie, we’ll be stopping by soon!

Blending in!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them…

Now I know there are some of you dolls out there who wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without your make-up on. It’s O.K. to admit it! Some have to have the whole shabang, while others at the very minimum wouldn’t be caught dead without at least a coat of mascara and an application of their favorite Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker. Mine’s “Orange Pop”…what’s yours!?

vintage-lip-smacker-ad

Hey, we all want to look our best! I’m in the beauty business after all, so I know all about it. Quick question…what’s the biggest beauty blunder you can make? I know, I know, there are a lot of them, and trust me I’ve seen all kinds pass through the doors of the Pink Bubble. In my professional opinion though it’s this…matching your foundation to your skin color as close as possible. Secondly, blend darlings, blend! Use a clean make-up sponge and don’t stop at the jaw line ladies, after all, your skin doesn’t. Apply a little foundation color to your neck as well. I’m sure you’ll all agree that there’s nothing worse than a white pasty neck under a tanned and blushed face, no matter how perfect the rest looks.

My newest client Daisy was a good example of not matching her foundation to her complexion. But Daisy gets a pass and I’ll tell you why…she was a little confused, and I can’t blame her! You see Daisy, a gorgeous #3, is a transitional gal. That is, she has the pale head and torso color of a regular #3 and the tanned arms and legs of her later #4 sisters. Ask yourself…what color foundation would you choose? Do you match your face to your torso or do you go for the sun-kissed color of the rest of you? What a predicament to say the least. Especially during those hot summer months when you have to wear shorts!

DSC08073

Well, the best advice I could give Daisy was this…embrace what makes you different and don’t cover anything up, just be yourself and show off both! After all, you’re a rarity, be proud of your place in Barbie doll history. You’ll find that very difference is what makes you special and probably the most interesting girl in anyone’s collection!

Deciding to take my advice, Daisy and I began our afternoon together starting as always with our recommended Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body. And boy did she need it! I’d guess Daisy may have been wearing her foundation for years, but with a little elbow grease it was all removed.

DSC08069

After a good session of hair prep with Daffy, who washed and conditioned her brunette locks, she returned to my chair for her comb-out, set and style.

Here’s a quick shot of her refreshed ponytail, before and after her hair session:

Picture4

From there we moved on to her make-up. She needed some attention and repair work to her brows. Happy with the results, I moved on to her eyes, replacing the missing color on her shadow and lids. Next, beautiful new lips and of course a bit of blush. Gold hoop earrings were the obvious missing accessory and these of course were brought to us by the ever helpful Beatrice. Thanks Bea!

Here is a beautiful photo of Daisy’s results!

I guess the old adage “Less is more!” certainly applied to Daisy’s dilemma. Now, her two-toned body is her best feature. No need to hide it Daisy…you’re a special doll indeed!

A great big thank you goes out to Sue for sending Daisy to the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa! In fact she was so excited with Daisy’s recent results, that she wanted to share her with you all right away!

Halloween With Millie!

DSC06075

P.B.D.S. Client – #0029

From the collection of Patricia!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them…

I just love Halloween. The air is crisp and cool and I enjoy the crunching sounds of the fallen leaves under my feet. Carved pumpkins and black sparkly cats that decorate the windows and porches all over town are wonderful to behold on my walk in to work. Later tonight, I’ll be joined on my journey home by little witches, ghosts and goblins running along the sidewalks and front lawns with their overflowing bags of treats. It’s a magical night!

I also love a spooky tale, especially true ones…don’t you?!

It was Halloween and I was alone here at the spa. Vera, Daffy and Beatrice had all left early to prepare themselves for the evenings festivities of costume parties and trick-or-treaters. At 4:30 in the afternoon it was already beginning to grow dark outside as it does this time of year. Doubting anyone was going to drop in for a last-minute rinse and set, I decided to go ahead and call it a day myself.

I went in the back and gathered my things. Putting on my coat, I turned off the lights as I passed their switches one by one till I was at the front door. I flipped over the hanging sign to “Closed” and gave one final glance over my shoulder, making sure everything was in order before I left. Giving the last switch a final flick, I reached for the doorknob. Suddenly, a voice coming from the dimly lit room behind me whispered a soft “Hello.” Clutching the collar of my coat, I whirled around to face my newest and most unexpected client. “Oh my lord, you scared me to death!” I laughed nervously, quickly switching the lights back on.

DSC06090“I’m sorry I frightened you…won’t you help me…I’m so very late.” said the young girl. Calming myself I replied, “Of course dear, I can help you, I just didn’t hear you come in!” (which was strange as I always hear the beauty chimes ring as the door opens in the reception entry.) “Just let me take off my coat.” Placing it on a chair, I began to say “What is it that I…” turning to face a now empty spot. Somehow the girl had already taken a seat at my station, which by the way, was on the other side of the room!

She sat there staring at her reflection as I walked up from behind. “You’re pretty quick!” I told her. Her eyes slowly lifted up to meet mine in the mirror. “I’m sorry…won’t you help me…I’m just so very late.” she softly said again. “Now dear, it’s never too late here at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa, in fact you just made it in for our Halloween special! I said cheerily. “What’s your name?” I asked her. “Millie.” she said softly. “O.K. Millie, let’s see what we can do!”

I started off Millie’s beauty treatments with our Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body of course! I then washed and conditioned her hair. I couldn’t help but notice she was just ice-cold as I wrapped the towel around her blonde locks, brushing my fingers along her neck, tucking in the strays. “Your freezing you poor thing!” I gave her an extra-large spa towel to drape over her lap for warmth. After I set her hair, I said “Lets start on your make-up. Are you going out tonight sweetie? You got a Halloween date?” Though she hadn’t said much all this time, she suddenly looked up and replied “Yes…my date…I’m so very late…” “Well, you’ll be worth the wait!” I said continuing my work. I shaped and colored in her brows and replaced the missing color from her blue shadow and then darkened her lids. A fresh coat of deep red lip color was then applied. “Almost finished…there!”

DSC06165And with that, I slowly turned her back around to face her reflection. “I think you need a bit more blush though, you’re still so pale!” dabbing her cheeks with just a bit more color before I was satisfied with the results. “And wear these, a little “treat” for Halloween…on the house!” I said placing the golden hoops on her ears.

Picture6

Picture8

Picture7

Picture5

Millie gazed at herself in the looking-glass in a way that almost seemed she was looking far beyond her own reflection. “Well I guess that’s it for me, besides your late, remember? Let me get you your bill and my card. I’d love for you to come back!” I went to Vera’s desk to get the receipt book. Filling in her first name…”Millie,” I began my walk back. “What was your last name dear?” I asked, realizing just then that it was very quiet. Too quiet. I was alone. My station and the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa were both very empty!

Walking home that chilly evening, my pace quickened as it always does, past the old cemetery. Something did catch my eye though, just behind the tall iron gates. It was a quick glint of moonlight reflecting off a golden hoop earring. I stopped and slowly turned to get a closer look. It was worn by a pretty young girl whose blonde hair was tied back in a familiar top-knot ponytail. She was standing just beyond the second row of granite tombstones and statues, the evening mist just beginning to form at her feet. Her beautiful pale face seemed to glow in the moon’s silver beams. Millie smiled at me from the darkness and raised a pale hand and slowly waved. Taking my own hand from the warmth of my coat pocket, I tentatively returned her wave. As if by magic, a tall young man with a crew-cut appeared at her side. She seemed happy to see him, and took hold of his offered arm. They made a hauntingly beautiful couple! I stood mesmerized as they both seemed to slowly fade away…into the darkness.

Millie wishes you all a very Happy Halloween!

“Up”-Town Girls!

P.B.D.S. Clients – #0029

From the collection’s of Lisa, Jaime & Victoria!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into three!

Though they’ve never met, these three Pink Bubbles Doll Spa clients all have one thing in common…a run-in with a pair of scissors! Yes, each one of them had the unfortunate experience of having their long ponytails lopped off, leaving them a little “short” on styling options. Whether hacked off above or just below the shoulders, they all faced the same problem… to do the best with what they had (left!) That’s where I come in, adding the second thing they all have in common, taking a seat in my chair!

Now, we all know that a gals hair is her crowning glory, but when that crown has been irrevocably altered by a little “beautician-in-training,”  it can be quite upsetting for the doll forced to live with the results. Don’t worry ladies, when a hair tragedy strikes, there’s always hope here at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa!

Our first example is Paige. This striking brunette was in dire beauty straits when she first arrived, as you can see from her “before” picture below. After a day of beauty services to her face and body, the last thing to tend to was her cut hair. It was decided an elegant up-do was the way to go and she, and her owner Lisa, were thrilled with the results. You’d hardly guess it was the same girl!

Picture8

DSC04208

Picture10

Lottie, from the collection of Jaime, faced  the same hair challenge. A lovely #3, she was nearly perfect…except for her hair. Cut off at the shoulders, the remains of her blonde ponytail were fashioned into the elegant bun style seen below.

jm 1517u jm 1511u jm 1508u

What a difference a day at Pink Bubbles can make! She’s now the perfect fashion model for “Gay Parisienne” one of the rarest of all vintage Barbie doll outfits. Magnifique!

jm 1547u

When this blonde bombshell is spotted out on the town, admiring gentlemen call out, “Ooh la la…it’s Lottie!”

jm 1565u

Our third example of a cut ponytail fix is Edie, a Swirl with a very pretty shade of red hair. So pretty in fact, her owner Victoria wanted to save it, so we took on the challenge! Luckily, her swirl bang hair was still long enough to make it around the top wrap. After that though, there wasn’t much to work with. The solution? A double curled topknot! And as a tribute to the classic yellow ribbon that would have held the bottom of her ponytail in place, a charming decorative bow is added as the finishing touch.

Picture1 Picture5

Picture4

So there you have it. Three examples of hair mishaps with happy endings! So the next time you come across a gal with “cut” hair, don’t just dismiss her, she may actually be a “diamond in the rough.” Take a moment and think back to this fabulous trio. Who knows, you may have found your own “Up”-Town Girl” who, with a little help, could soon be ready to model the most elegant evening gown in your collection!

Thank you Lisa & Paige, Jaime & Lottie and Victoria & Edie

Betty…Pick-Up…Table Five!

DSC05112

P.B.D.S. Client – #0028

From the collection of Victoria!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them!

I admire a gal with a dream… especially when that dream is opening up your own business. After all, mine was to open the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa and here we are!

My friend Betty’s dream was owning her own restaurant and tonight hers was finally coming true. In fact “Betty’s Drive-Thru” was set to have its grand-opening in just a few hours when she came rushing in to the spa. “Honey, I hope you can squeeze me in cause I’m running outta time and one of my waitresses just called in sick! Imagine that, on her first night!” she told me. “Can I put this in your window while I’m here?” she said holding up the “Waitress Wanted” sign. “I gotta find a girl quick and I can’t be in two places at once! I may have to interview and hire her in curlers!”

wp45

“Sure thing Betty!” I said. While she placed the sign in the window, (I’m not even going to think about what passerby’s would say, scratching their heads..after all a waitress needed at Pink Bubbles?!)  I started preparing my station for the job ahead.

DSC05114

Poor Betty, she’d been going a mile-a-minute for months readying the restaurant, and it was taking a toll on her appearance. She wanted to look great tonight and I had just under two hours to get the order right!

The first thing I recommended from our menu to Betty was a relaxing Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body. She needed some time to just relax, clear her head and let us wait on her for a bit.

When Daffy brought her back from her treatment, she took a seat in my chair and I got to work. Her hair was just a mess, I don’t think she’d run a comb through it in weeks, she didn’t have the time! After a good washing and some conditioner, I de-tangled it and began the styling. I pulled her hair up and back, securing it into a smooth ponytail and then curled the ends. I then addressed the messy curls of her bangs. Now, her hair looks great!

Picture8

Picture6Next, I started on her make-up. I darkened her faded brows, then I evened out her blue eye shadow. Next, I touched up her lids. Her beautiful blue eyes finished, I mixed and applied a pretty coral shade of lipstick. I also gave her a touch of blush as she was a little pale. She looked years younger! I had Beatrice bring in her tray of “Safety-First!” earrings, (as if you could stop her!) and she selected the perfect pair.

Picture7

All the while, Betty kept her eye nervously on the door, waiting for someone to notice the sign…but unfortunately, no one did. “Well, your ready to go!” I said as I turned her to the mirror. “You’re gonna knock em’ dead tonight Betty, I just know it!” Giving herself one last look, she said “I just hope to get through it. I guess I’m gonna have to pull triple duty tonight, owner, manager and waitress!” She then walked over and pulled her sign from the window.

Picture9

“You know what Betty? You’re going to enjoy your big night as the proud owner only! I’ve done my fair share of waiting tables and if you’ll have me, I’m happy to help tonight! Look, I’m already wearing the right shoes!” I said pointing down to my no-nonsense white ortho’s. We both laughed! “Your hired Honey…your a real doll!” she said giving me a big hug. “Dinner’s on me…and by the way, you get to keep your own tips!”

DSC05411
The proud new owner of “Betty’s Drive – Thru” shines as bright as the spotlights outside greeting her hungry customers! A Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body and full hair and make-up service has made Betty as fresh as the home-made apple pies on tonight’s menu!

Thank you Victoria and Betty for visiting the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa!

The Girl Most Likely!

DSC04716

P.B.D.S. Client – #0027

From the collection of Christine!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them!

Here at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa, we’re often asked to wipe away years of wear and tear from the faces and hairdo’s of our clients. As a-matter-of-fact, turning backs the hands of time is our business! Take for instance the requests of our next spa guest, Marjorie.

Everyone knew a girl like Marjorie in High School…she was the popular girl, the cheerleader, teacher’s pet and more than likely voted “Queen of the Prom!”

On that final day of High School, when she pulled away from the parking lot in that new convertible she got as a graduation gift from her parents, you just knew she was off to begin her fabulous future. Admit it, you were a tad jealous…I know I was!

All of those wonderful things actually did happen for our Marjorie. She had a wonderful life indeed! She graduated college, eventually married her “Campus Hero” and settled into a lovely Dream House. The happy years just drifted by.

But no one, not even Marjorie, escapes the passing of the years. And the day she opened her mailbox and found out her High School reunion was just around the corner, she decided she had better try to pull herself together! As you can imagine, girls like Marjorie have the added pressure of living up to everyone’s memories of her. Being voted  “Girl Most Likely…” comes back to haunt you in the end! In fact, she was “most likely” going to be the girl scrutinized the closest by her classmates. And that’s where Pink Bubbles comes in!

DSC04712

Still a lovely girl all these years later, I agreed with her that we could still make some improvements for that evenings reunion. She wanted to look her best, so I advised her it’s always good to start with our Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body, and she agreed. Daffy made sure Marjorie was well taken care of while I prepared my station. When she returned, I washed, conditioned and re-set her hair, eliminating the dreaded “frizzies!”

DSC04745

Happy with her hair, I got to work refreshing her make-up. Her brows, lids and lips were restored to their former glory and with the assistance of Madge, her finger and toenail polish matched the red shade of her lips. Our jobs complete, I finally turned her to the mirror to show her the results and I swear I saw a sparkle in her eyes she didn’t have when she first came in! Looking at her now, I couldn’t imagine her being any more lovely that she was at that very moment!

DSC04733

I asked her what she planned on wearing that evening and a mischievous smile spread across her face. “You know, I tried on my old prom dress yesterday and I’m proud to say, it still fits!” Of course, with her figure, I already assumed it did! “Wouldn’t it be a hoot to show up in it!” she laughed. “Honey,” I said, “You still got the face and the figure, but do yourself a big favor, forget the dress! Your pushing your luck as it is with those broads!”

Picture2caPicture3ca

Picture1caAn “Enchanted Evening” awaits Christine’s lovely doll! She’s managed to go back in time with the help of the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa staff. A Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body, followed by hair and make-up treatments made this gal “most likely” to re-take her throne as “Queen of the Prom!” once again!

Thank you Marjorie and Christine for visiting us here at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa…come back again real soon!

All dolls have secret lives as we all know…here’s a peek into one of them!

Who doesn’t love to travel? I know I do! Of course, I rarely escape the pink stucco walls of the spa these days, we’ve been so busy.  That’s why I always enjoy a good travel adventure shared by a fortunate client who actually gets to go somewhere exotic. By the time I spray on their final coat of Aqua-Net, I feel like I actually tagged along on their trip! Why, this month alone, I vicariously went to Miami Beach, Catalina Island, Japan and with the latest tale from my newest client Bobbie – Jamaica, without ever leaving my station!

I’ll admit when I first met her, I was taken aback a little by her beatnik style. But clearly not as much as Vera our receptionist, who couldn’t hide her disapproving looks as she took her in from head to toe. “Your twelve o’clock is here.” she announced bringing her in, “Please have a seat dear. You’ll be here a while! Would you prefer coffee or tea?” “I’ll take coffee, thank you!” replied our guest. Always willing to pitch in, especially on hectic days like today, Vera called out “Daffy! Bring coffee to station one!” and returned to her desk.

Now we all know vacations don’t always go as planned, but my new friend Bobbie’s adventure was indeed a trip for the books! According to her, she won the two-week Jamaican holiday as a contestant on “Let’s Make A Deal!”

Who would have thought dressing up as a giant carrot and being selected by Monty Hall to make a deal would end up bringing a girl such drama and adventure! Remembering back to that fateful day, she says she’s very happy she traded the new avocado green refrigerator for mystery door number three where the lovely Carol Merrill was standing!

lets-make-a-deal“Let’s Make A Deal!” A place where girls dressed as carrots can end up in a pickle!

According to Bobbie, things went awry the moment she landed on the island of Jamaica. First, her luggage was nowhere to be found in the baggage claim. Later she was told apologetically, her new set of Samsonite “Silhouette” luggage (again courtesy of Monty Hall and Carol Merrill) containing all her lovely clothes was on its way to Canada! (BTW, who could have been so careless as to let a thing like that happen?!!)

In addition, adding to her dilemma, most of her $500.00 prize money was gone as well as she had tucked it behind the mirror of the stylish make-up case. With only $17.14 found at the bottom of her purse and a luckily paid in advance hotel room to her name, Bobbie decided just to make the best of things. So with the tenacity of Scarlett O’Hara, determined not to let that ole’ Civil War get her down, she set off to enjoy her holiday!

As you can imagine, her dough didn’t last long and with thirteen days to go and her luggage still remaining M.I.A., she took matters into her own hands. Walking along the shore, she was drawn to the rhythmic sound of a reggae band playing for the tourists. She noticed their large gumbie drum leaning alone against the tree and decided to give it a try! Musically gifted, she blended smoothly into their tempo. After several numbers, the bands lead singer, a nice fellow named Bob, made her an honorary member of his band “The Wailers” by giving her an equal share of the tips left by the appreciative listeners. She sure did need the money and was grateful to have it! They became great friends and she met them there every afternoon to play for the remainder of her stay!

She had a ball but said she may have taken things a bit too far by adopting the wild hair style of her band mates. Sunshine, salt, sand, and plenty of humidity for two weeks straight created the “do” seen below for me to untangle!

When she made it back home, her shocked mother made an appointment and drove her straight to the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa where she spent the afternoon with me, my rat-tail comb and a good conditioner! I really enjoyed listening to Bobbie’s Jamaican tales and hope she’ll return to the spa sometime soon. With her gorgeous new looks, I’m sure many more adventures await her!

Please enjoy her before & after photos below!

Bobbie says “Never be afraid to “go for broke!” When life hands you an avocado green refrigerator, don’t play it safe, trade it for the mystery behind door number three…you just may have the time of your life!”

Bobbie really needed a vacation from her vacation! She started off with a relaxing Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body. Some unfortunate facial stains were successfully treated and lightened, definitely improved, don’t you agree! With a face-full of refreshed make-up, coupled with her rescued mane of dark locks, I’d say she’s as beautiful a vision as any Caribbean sunset!

Thank you Greg and Bobbie for visiting us here at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa! Come back soon!

Attack Of The 50 Foot Barbie!

            From the collection of Kym!

Here at the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa, everyone is welcome, even if you can’t possibly enter the spa doors! So it was for our next client. A statuesque beauty, “My Size” Barbie had a request of gigantic proportions. She dreamed of a retro look, harkening back to the glory years of her past, the early 1960’s.

I knew there were going to be challenges right away due to her size. Firstly, she would never fit into any of our stylists chairs and you could also forget about sticking that big head into our petite pink wash bowl! Though she could have easily reached down and torn the roof off the spa, much like “The Attack Of The Fifty Foot Woman!” she was a dear and let the staff tend to her out back in the parking lot. Many cars had to be moved!

After her Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body, “M.S.” Barbie had her hair washed, conditioned and de-tangled, which by the way was quite a chore since she’d been roaming around for many years, obviously without a hairbrush. We did our best to capture the classic ponytail hairstyle even though she wasn’t rooted for it at all. And talk about hard to curl hair, this gal had a head full!

With her hair finally styled, it was now time to move on to her face. As she requested, I drew inspiration from the classic Barbie look. I shaped her brows and filled them in with the appropriate shade. Happy with the results, I moved on to her eyes. She obviously didn’t have the molded lids, in fact she had rooted lashes, but I did my best to give her the vintage Barbie gaze, eyes to the right. And of course we had to have the blue shadow!  The finishing touch was of course her lips, which were now fuller and a deep red shade instead of the pretty pink she started with. After a mani & pedi with Madge she’s ready for her debut!

A first for the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa, may we present our biggest client ever, Miss “My Size” Barbie, a modern girl with a retro twist!

From the imagination of Kym and standing over 3 feet high, here is her vintage inspired “My Size” Barbie doll. Kym plans on sewing her new gal a replica of the classic black & white striped swimsuit. I hope she’ll be able to find her the perfect mules! Perhaps she will send the Pink Bubbles Doll Spa a photo when she’s finished that we can share with our readers!

To Braid Or Not To Braid, That Is The Question!

P.B.D.S. Client #0022

From the collection of Debbi!

Sometimes a dolls past and present just can’t seem to separate themselves. Like a braided ponytail, they just happily intertwine with each other. This was the case with our next Pink Bubbles Doll Spa client.

She actually arrived a little early for her appointment and as a reward from punctuality-obsessed Vera, wasn’t made to wait the extra fifteen minutes before being escorted to my station. As you all know by now, Vera runs a very tight ship when it comes to her appointment book. Early or on-time arrivals will always find a quite charming receptionist, while tardy clients more than likely come face-to-face with the cool and curt version, no matter what their excuses may be. A sort of Dr. Jekyll & Ms. Hyde situation comes to mind! If you knew Vera as well as I do, you’d understand. She has always kept everything in her life in very tidy order. Her home, children and of course, all three of her ex-husbands! So please, if you can, be on time!

My new client was a very pretty girl, though I will admit, quite disheveled. I would imagine any of us would be in this same state had we experienced her adventures. She certainly had an interesting past, that’s for sure! According to her, for more years than she cares to remember, she had been forced to live a perpetual childhood, her head stuck on a Skipper body! She doesn’t recall how it happened, but I would guess she was caught up in a head-swapping situation with her childhood owner. I’ve seen it many times here in the spa. Viewed by other dolls, including handsome Ken, as “just a kid”, she had nearly given up hope for a normal life. Luckily, she joined her new friend Debbi’s collection and was able to finally grow-up again and regained her womanly curves with a body replacement. Now it was time to take her transformation a step further with an appointment at Pink Bubbles!

When it came time to discuss hairstyle options, she wasn’t sure whether to keep her braided ponytail she’d worn for years or have it smoothed. I liked the charming braided look myself. It was a very cute look and really flattered her. But would the style be too much of a reminder of her unique past, too childish for her now that she had finally regained her new figure? In fact, she was going to visit Beatrice in our Fashion Boutique later and couldn’t wait to try on some lovely new dresses. Would the braid be right with her new wardrobe, she wondered? After quite a bit of a discussion it was decided she would keep it.

With the decision made, she enjoyed a well deserved Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body and then had her hair washed, conditioned and untangled with the assistance of our shampoo girl Daffy. They both seemed to really liked each other right away and I heard much laughter coming from the back. Daffy’s been a great new addition to our staff here at The Pink Bubbles Doll Spa and our customers evidently agree as she receives wonderful reviews on the pink comment cards Vera gives our guests. I do hope she stays on here at the spa, even if she finally achieves her dream of becoming an actress. I guess we’ll see!

When my client returned, I was ready to proceed with her hair. I began by pulling her hair straight back and gave her a wrapped top-knot ponytail. I separated and re-braided the hair. The ends were then curled and set and then a pretty white ribbon was selected to finish the style. I fluffed up her bangs and voila! Everyone agreed the braided ponytail was a cute take on the classic style and I think she’s really happy she kept it. It sets her apart and makes her beautifully unique! I then repaired her make-up while Madge tended to her nails.

Though this young gal endured an accidental extended childhood, she’s now ready to move on to the next chapter in her life. I can’t wait to see her in a lovely dress and heels. And with that new figure of hers, I’m sure she’ll never be mistaken by Ken for a little girl ever again!

bpt2Debbi’s pretty doll really enjoyed her long-awaited “grown-up” day at the spa! She started with the Pink Bubbles Beauty Bath for Face & Body. She had her braided ponytail hairstyle refreshed and selected a pretty white ribbon to finish it. Her eyebrows, lids and lips were also redone. Madge provided the matching polish for her nails. Beatrice was happy to assist her in choosing the “Safety-First” earrings she wears, secretly hoping our gal will choose a new dress from the Pink Bubbles Fashion Boutique to go with them!
